Symptoms we assess

Heavy, aching legs? Common signs of vein problems

Many people come to the clinic because of how their legs feel, not only how they look. These symptoms are often caused by venous reflux, where faulty valves let blood fall back down the leg. A duplex ultrasound scan at your consultation shows whether that is the cause.

Heavy, aching legs at night

Aching, throbbing or heaviness that builds through the day and eases when you put your feet up.

Swollen ankles

Ankle swelling by the evening, sometimes leaving sock marks, that settles overnight.

Night cramps and restless legs

Cramping, burning or restlessness in the calves, often worse in warm weather.

Bulging, twisted veins

Visible varicose veins on the calf or thigh, which may itch or feel tender.

Skin changes around the ankle

Brown staining, eczema or hardened skin. These mean the veins have been under strain for some time and are worth assessing soon.

Thread and spider veins

Fine red or blue veins. A scan first checks for a hidden leaking vein feeding them.

Treatments in Leicester

Varicose and thread vein treatments at the Leicester clinic

Every treatment plan starts with a consultation and a duplex ultrasound scan, which maps exactly which veins are leaking. Treatments are carried out under local anaesthetic as walk-in, walk-out day procedures.

Main vein treatment

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

A thin catheter is passed into the faulty vein through a single needle entry, guided by ultrasound. Heat seals the vein from the inside, and blood then returns to the heart through healthy veins. RFA is one of the first-line treatments recommended by NICE for varicose veins caused by reflux in the main surface veins. Read the full guide to RFA in Leicester.

Smaller and recurrent veins

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy

A medicine mixed into a foam is injected into the vein under ultrasound guidance, causing it to close and fade. It suits twisting branch veins, veins too small for a catheter and veins that have come back after earlier treatment. More than one session may be needed.

Thread veins

Microsclerotherapy

A very fine needle is used to inject each thread vein, which then fades over the following weeks. Most people need two to three sessions a few weeks apart. Thread vein treatment is cosmetic and is not usually available on the NHS. Read more about thread vein treatment in Leicester.

Common Questions

Varicose veins and private vascular care in Leicester: your questions

Where exactly is the Leicester clinic?

Mr Elboushi's private appointments in Leicester are held at Premier Veins Leicester, The One Clinic, 36 De Montfort Street, Leicester LE1 7GS. There is free parking at the clinic, and it is about a ten-minute walk from Leicester railway station. To book, call 0333 366 2246 or book online through Premier Veins.

Do I need a GP referral to see a private vascular surgeon in Leicester?

No. You can self-refer for a private consultation without a GP letter. A referral is welcome if you have one, and most private health insurers do require a GP letter, so check your policy.

How quickly can I get a private vascular appointment in Leicester?

Private appointments are often available within a few days to two weeks, compared with NHS waiting times that can be several months. Availability depends on clinic capacity, so call to check current slots.

Why do my legs feel heavy and ache, especially in the evening or at night?

Heaviness, aching, throbbing and night-time cramps are common symptoms of venous reflux, where faulty valves let blood fall back down the leg. Symptoms usually build up through the day and ease when you raise your legs. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, so a duplex ultrasound scan is the way to find out whether your veins are responsible.

What is radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for varicose veins?

RFA is a minimally invasive treatment that uses heat delivered through a thin catheter to seal the faulty vein from the inside. It is done under local anaesthetic as a day case, and it is one of the first-line treatments recommended by NICE for varicose veins caused by truncal reflux.

How long does RFA take, and when can I go back to work?

The procedure usually takes around an hour and you walk out of the clinic the same day. Most people return to desk work within one to two days and to more physical activity within about a week.

How long do I need to wear compression stockings after RFA?

It varies with the treatment and the individual, and your surgeon will advise you. If compression stockings or bandages are used after treatment, NICE guideline CG168 recommends wearing them for no more than seven days.

Is varicose vein treatment painful?

Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so most people feel only the initial injections. Afterwards it is common to have bruising and a pulling or tight feeling along the treated vein for two to three weeks, which settles on its own.

Will my varicose veins come back after treatment?

Treatment closes the veins that are leaking now, but the tendency to develop varicose veins can continue, so some people develop new veins over the years. Treating the underlying reflux first, confirmed on a duplex scan, gives the most durable result.

Does Mr Elboushi consult in Arabic?

Yes. Mr Elboushi is a native Arabic speaker and is happy to consult in Arabic or English, or a mix of both. Arabic-speaking patients from Leicester, the East Midlands and further afield are very welcome.
